Mounting Using Elephant Anchors- We use a combination of studs, lath as well as Toggle bolt to make the installation secure when studs and lath are not available. Now, it’s time to hang your QLED OLED TV. Give it some good horizontal and vertical tugs, listening and watching carefully for any movement or signs of instability. Hopefully, you’ve now got a solid, secure mount on your wall. This is the second potential pitfall with plaster – being too aggressive with the screwgun can crush the plaster and weaken the overall mount. From here, you should be able to follow the mount instructions for drilling a pilot hole, and then placing your lag bolts.īe careful not to torque the bolts too tight – listen very carefully for sounds of the plaster cracking. You don’t want to be screwing into the plaster itself, only the stud. Now, widen out the hole in the plaster with a masonry bit the same diameter as the lag bolts you’ll be using with your mount (see the mount instructions). Perhaps you don’t have 16 inch on center studs, or perhaps you hit a horizontal beam the first time. If you hit the stud, congrats, you’re doing great. Now, measure 16 inches from your ‘good’ hole and drill another hole. If one of the new holes didn’t hit stud, you know the opposite one is centered. If you still find that you’re on the stud, great, your first hole is centered (ish). If you keep meeting resistance, you found a stud, hoorah! Now, repeat the same step 3/4″ to the left and right of that hole. You should drill for just a short distance and then hit air, and very likely your drill will crash into the wall and you’ll fall off the ladder. ![]() Then switch to a normal drill bit to drill through the lath. Next, get out a smallish masonry bit and drill a test hole through the plaster. You should be able to narrow down an approximate area. So, assuming your studs are 16 inch on center, measure off an area ~20 inches wide and go back and forth many times, lifting and recalibrating the stud finder each time. Unfortunately, it finds lots of other things too. I have a Zircon stud finder with a ‘deep scan’ feature that does a pretty good job of finding studs. As a result, high-power LEDs require cooling mechanisms to ensure they don’t overheat. Less than a halogen, but because LEDs are so small, this heat is concentrated in one spot. ![]() This can confuse the computer systems within cars, so the extra electronics are used to increase the voltage drop and avoid errors.Ĭontrary to popular opinion, LEDs do generate heat. The main reason for this is that LEDs operate at a lower voltage than the conventional 12V that a car provides. Both options require additional electronics between the car and the light. It also requires the least modifications to your car. This is significantly more expensive, and the LED kit option is thus much more popular. The alternative is purchasing an entirely new headlight fixture. This comprises LED bulbs that are shaped to be drop-in replacements for conventional halogen bulbs. The biggest is the replacement LED kit option. The aftermarket LED scene has two sections at the moment. This results in an overall safer environment for night driving for all road users. ![]() What this entails is that the road directly in front of the car can remain brightly lit, whereas areas occupied by oncoming traffic have only a dim light shining at them. This system allowed them to dim certain sections of the light while allowing the rest to remain bright. Audi, for instance, had a headlight on the 2013 A8 that had 25 individual LEDs per headlight. In 2007 Audi revealed full-LED headlights in the V10 model of their R8 sports car.īecause LEDs can be manufactured in various sizes, several nifty applications have been developed with them. Lexus was the first manufacturer to include LEDs in their headlights in 2006, but it wasn’t a complete implementation. Additionally, in low current applications, they also generate minimal heat. Their small nature and low power consumption make them perfect for such applications. You’ll see them on your cellphone and laptop, even ones that are 20 years old. One advantage of this form of light generation is that by adjusting the material properties of the semi-conductor, one can adjust the frequency of the emitted light, thus changing its color. If you really want to get into the details of this, check out How Stuff Works article on the topic. This movement of electrons generates light. Instead, an LED transfers current through a semi-conductor. Unlike halogen bulbs, LEDs don’t have a filament that current is passed through. Light Output: LED and HID headlights both have excellent light output, but LEDs illuminate instantly, while HIDs take a few seconds to achieve full brightness and proper color.Longevity: LED headlights have unmatched longevity compared with HID and especially halogen headlights.LED headlights win the comparison against HIDs narrowly for a few reasons: The sun’s color temperature at noon is 5500K – 6000K. Headlights whose light output most closely matches the sun’s color temperature tend to be the most effective for the human eye. The Light intensity is quite weak for the halogen and HID, while the LED bulbs have a very tightly concentrated, focused beam right near the center, with a strongly curved beam emanating from the center.Īlso, the color is higher on the Kelvin scale, coming in the right around a 6000K color, while the HIDs are closer to 5000K, and the Halogens at a 3500K or so. In this case, I’ve swapped one of the halogen bulbs for a LED bulb. From the factory, it’s equipped with HID low beams and halogen high beams. This example uses the headlights of an Infiniti G35. ![]() I would not install LEDs or HIDs in the stock housing. The image above demonstrates a clear advantage of LED headlight bulbs. Next would probably be a toss up between a retrofit (buy from retrofit source) and maybe a set of Chinese headlights from eBay. In short, the quickest and cheapest is a high performance set of halogen bulbs ($40 ish). That is why to do this properly either by a new headlight set with projectors or retrofit projectors into your head lights by opening them up. This is fixed with HIDs but you will give all of the oncoming traffic horrible glare and essentially blind oncoming traffic which does no one any good. This means further down the road will be darker but the light immediately in front of the car will be bright. LED lights typically cannot "throw" light as far as HIDs or higher quality halogens. However, the new for explorers come standard with LEDs and if you notice their reflector housing (if you look closely) is vastly different than it say those in the previous generation expedition. Projectors may accommodate standard halogen lights, HID (Hight intensity Distcharge), or LEDs. I have attached an image to help those that may not completely understand the terminology/headlight design. I've looked at HID installations in my other vehicle (non-projector). ![]() ![]() ![]() BTD6's Co-op, upon launch, spawned even more memes. On a few maps, namely Sanctuary and Peninsula, the player in the circle cannot do anything because of literally no space being available for towers. This is often very unfair, as often the player trapped in the circle will have no room to place large-footprint towers like farms. This divider type consists of a player stuck in a circle in the middle of the map surrounded by the territory of other players. Version 30.0 marked a return of divider memes due to the introduction of the "Radioactive" divider type. These faded away once co-op launched and some gave maps with uneven land distributions into "free-for-all" tower placement, although maps like Off the Coast wasn't safe from being mocked for its dividers. Another example would be Spice Islands, where the bottom-half players would only get water to place on. For example, if divided into four quarters, Firing Range would only allow the top-left player to place two small towers total. The mere reveal of 4-player co-op in BTD6 led to many jokes and memes involving dividing tracks into four quarters and pointing out how poor such land allotments would be to some of the teammates. In addition, it's also one of the worst crosspaths in the game, giving only a small boost to lead damage in 18.0 (and prior, it did absolutely nothing while the sub is submerged). It happens in Shogo and Wheel of Time, for example. This doesn’t affect every game, but you’ll notice it as horizontal lines across certain textures, likely flashing. There is a known bug when setting render threads to “4.” The game is running at 60 fps (with 3dfx v-sync enabled - see below), but when there are a few enemies on screen it drops down to 30-40 fps. Based on the CPU time, I could bump up the processor to a PII-450 and not experience any emulation slowdown. ![]() In that screenshot, I'm running Jedi Outcast, a game from 2003, and my CPU can handle it easily. Note that the Voodoo FIFO thread is, according to Sarah, probably "a grotesque overestimate, and counts the time this thread waits on the render threads", so I wouldn't worry if this is at 100%. If this is near 100% for each, then you might have performance loss.Įdit: Here is a screenshot highlighting some of this: You can see what percent of the host CPU core each render thread is currently utilizing. ![]() For some games (and depending on your host CPU), “2” will not be enough and you will hit a bottleneck that will cause in-game frame loss. Depending on your host CPU, you probably have render threads set to either “2” or “4”. This is also something you want to keep an eye on. Right below the framerate are the 3D card CPU render threads. This is very useful when checking game performance on different builds, since not all games have built-in frame counters. Doing so gives me a ~15 frame boost in-game, so there is a benefit in fiddling with this.Īnother useful bit on the machine status window is the current framerate (x frames/sec). If I set the guest CPU to a PII-450, CPU time on Half-Life goes to 95-100%, with little-to-no emulation speed loss. That’s quite low, so I know I can increase the guest CPU a bit. For example, if I run Half-Life on a PII-300 (w/ Voodoo 3), the CPU time sits around 70%. You can look at CPU time when running a game to have an idea of how much higher you can increase the guest CPU. Once this hits 100%, then emulation speed will begin to drop. One of the most important things here is “CPU time.” This essentially tells you what the load on the host CPU is, with “100%” indicating the host CPU is being fully used (not the entire CPU, but the host CPU core being used to emulate the guest CPU). First, the window is found under Misc -> Machine, and then enable the status option under Options -> Status. I couldn’t find a clear guide to what all of the information listed on the machine status window is, but understanding this info will let you tune your system better. PCem’s machine status window is vital for testing performance. I thought this point important to make first, because it seems like a lot of people first approach PCem thinking “What host do I need in order to emulate a PII-450?” It’s better to think of PCem performance on a game-by-game basis, rather than at the machine level. PCem relies on a dynamic recompiler for fast performance, and emulation speed depends on how a particular game utilizes the emulated CPU. With one game, I might be able to run it on a PII-450 at 100% speed (and still room to go higher), while another game might max out at 100% CPU time on a PII-300. Some tips, tricks, and other observations:Įmulation performance depends entirely on the game/software being run. I’m mostly interested in the upper end of PCem performance.
